Professional Development Offerings to State Organizations

Coordinated by LINCS Regional Resource Centers

The National Institute for Literacy offers outstanding professional development opportunities and makes them available nationally. These trainings are provided at no cost through the Institute's LINCS Regional Resource Centers (RRCs). Regional Resource Centers have been providing professional development opportunities for over 12 years with a goal of offering at least one professional development training in each state during its funding cycle. These are the types of trainings being offered for 2008 - 2009:

  • Six newly revised and improved learning disabilities trainings, Learning to Achieve, two given in each of the three LINCS regions (headquartered in Boston, Massachusetts, Knoxville, Tennessee, and Oakland, California), to assist adult educators in understanding and responding to those with learning disabilities/differences in the classrooms
  • Evidence-based Practices training in Arkansas, Kansas, Texas, Utah
  • Beginning Adult Basic Education (ABE) Health Literacy Curriculum training in California (one north and one south), Arkansas, Hawaii, Nevada, New Mexico, Utah
  • Teaching Adults to Read: A Research-based Practices Workshop in Arkansas, Arizona, Illinois, Nevada
  • Research on Reading Instruction and Assessment and the Components of Reading in the District of Columbia, Florida, Missouri, Utah

In addition, a number of online courses are made available either free or for a nominal fee. Those courses include Assessment Basics for Adult Education, Integration of Technology into the Adult Education Classroom, and The Path of Professional Development Evaluation . Many national informational presentations are given to orient the field to the National Institute for Literacy and its many resources and offerings.
