What the experts say:
According to the Components of Numeracy and the ANN Teaching and Learning Principles, it is very important to teach mathematics contextually. The Math Tool Kit is a wealth of activities that connect important mathematical concepts in a contextual content of construction.
There are many lessons applicable to algebra such as direct and inverse variation and using formulas. There is a lesson on Pythagorean theorem and volume of a cylinder that would be applicable for GED or algebra. There are lessons on measuring that could be used at ABE level. There are also resources for career education that would be applicable for career pathway programs. While this math tool kit was purposefully designed for college transitions, it could be used for GED levels as well.
This website is of value to the field of adult education because it provides instructional tools, worksheets, additional web links, instructional ideas, and other teaching aids. The lessons focus on the construction industry and therefore, will assist learners with interconnections. Furthermore, brain research has shown that long-term memory, or genuine learning, depends upon information that the learner feels is significant. These lessons will create learners who are mathematically literate because they will be able to apply mathematical thinking and reasoning to real-life problem solving. This type of problem-based learning is also motivational. In addition, the many statistics facts that are sited are informative to adult education instructors and other adult education administrators. It creates a real sense of urgency to all educators of mathematics.
The most significant link on this website is TAB Fourteen, because it is full of real life applications and since it is not copyrighted, it can be copied and distributed for educational purposes.
