Training required: It is assumed that users of this manual have the training/experience/credentials to be ESOL instructors and supervisors. The manual is designed to provide the additional training needed to launch successful ESOL initiatives in the workplace.

Abstract: This training manual was a collaborative project of the Tennessee Department of Labor and Workforce Development and the Center for Literacy Studies at The University of Tennessee, using a volunteer task force of Tennessee adult education supervisors and ESOL teachers working together with the authors. The manual was developed for English Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) supervisors and instructors to prepare them to launch successful workplace initiatives in business and industry. Major topics include: knowing and presenting your adult education program to business and Industry, knowing your community's needs and understanding the workplace, designing a plan to deliver and sustain educational services to the workforce, and knowing your results by evaluating and monitoring progress.

What the experts say: This resource is extremely well-done and is a collection of some of the best training material on workplace English Language Acquisition. A special strength of the resource is the evidence base provided in the reference list, research summaries, and articles. The manual includes basic information, Powerpoint presentations, and very useful checklists on how to design a program, present a plan to a workplace community, and monitoring and evaluating the program. It would benefit from more information on how to deliver instruction, although such information is available in other resources. All workplace ELL and ABE instructors and program developers should review this manual.
