What's Happening at the Institute

November 2009: Open for Subscriptions. New Transitions to Post-secondary Education Discussion List. This list will provide an ongoing professional development forum for practitioners and others from the fields of Adult Secondary Education, English Language Acquisition, post-secondary education, and workforce development.

November 2009: New National Family Literacy Discussion List . The Goodling Institute for Research in Family Literacy at The Pennsylvania State University and the National Center for Family Literacy are sponsoring a new National Family Literacy Discussion List.

October 2009: Institute Announces 2009-2010 Contract Awards. The development of Early Childhood factsheets, materials for a new Learning Disabilities program, teacher-friendly reading resources, and national summits on adult education in urban regions comprise the contracts.

October 2009: Institute, OVAE Invest in Great Cities Summit. The new, joint, two-year initiative will bring together key education stakeholders from five urban cities to discuss best practices for providing adult education.

October 2009: Brenda Dann-Messier Named the Department’s Assistant Secretary for Vocational and Adult Education. Dann-Messier received Senate confirmation and is scheduled to begin at OVAE in October.

September 2009: New, Expanded LINCS Discussion Lists and Resource Collections Learn more about the online lists and resources and how the Institute is working to meet the needs of the field.

September 2009: Adult Education, Literacy Stakeholders Convene Institute and Department of Education, Office of Vocational and Adult Education gather input and provide national updates on adult literacy and education.

September 2009: Celebrate International Literacy Day, September 8, 2009 Check out activities that you can do to celebrate International Literacy Day and support literacy throughout the year.

August 2009: Understanding and Applying Research in the Classroom: A Guide for Today’s Educators This 30-60 minute self-paced online course introduces users to information about scientific research and its relevance to educational decision making.

July 2009: Learning to Achieve – National Learning Disabilities Training Program Launches Today.

July 2009: Vinita Chhabra is Institute’s New Sr. Program Officer for Adult Literacy

July 2009: The Institute and the Office of Vocational and Adult Education convene talks on adult literacy. More than 50 invited education and literacy experts participate in the July 7-8 invitational meeting at the U.S. Department of Education.

May 2009: Institute Welcomes Patricia Bennett: New Associate Director of Programs.

April 2009: Literacy for All: Advocacy, Libraries, and Literacy, a Webcast Summit

April 2009: Investigating the Language and Literacy Skills Required for Independent Online Learning, investigates and provides findings on the threshold levels of language and literacy proficiency necessary for adult learners, to use the Internet for independent learning.

March 2009: Timothy Shanahan, chairman of the National Early Literacy Panel and other members of the NELP participate in a discussion of the Institute's new report Developing Early Literacy on March 9-13, 2009.

March 2009: The much-anticipated National Early Literacy Panel report drew many literacy, education, and early childhood leaders, and practitioners to Washington, DC for its January release at the National Press Club. Hear and see the expert panel as they present findings from Developing Early Literacy
