I think it is worth taking some time to look at the framework from its inception. The four purposes as expressed needs from adult learners is something I never used explicitly in my classes or trainings. Perhaps in the back of my mind or at the base of my approach in unspecified terms the four purposes existed, but I have not been intentional about them with my students and staff until recently. The same is true in terms of the standards. I absolutely and explicitly worked with the first three - read with understanding, convey ideas in writing and speak so others can understand - but moving down the list I realize I have never done anything with students or staff explicitly with any of the others except reflect and evaluate. I assumed I was covering take responsibility for learning because I was trained in the Silent Way (Caleb Gattegno) and learner autonomy is part and parcel of that approach. But I wasn't explicit about it. So, when we say EFF is something we have all been doing all along it is important to remember that the four purposes were learner generated (vs. student centered) and a good question may be is the work taking place explicitly, intentionally and responsively. This is where I am working with my teachers and tutors and with myself. Susan Rowley St. James ESL Seattle, WA Sjesl2@aol.com
