Last year, our efforts on this list to plan an EFF/ESL gathering at TESOL didn't work out so well. I think it's because we planned to meet toward the end of the conference and, by that time, we had all run into old friends, made new friends, or just needed to stop talking for an evening! So I'd like to suggest that we gather earlier in the event, before we get swept up by other activities - perhaps before or after the Adult Ed Interest Section meeting, which is on Weds. from 6-8? I think it's especially important that we create a time to meet, since we have been given only brief opportunities to talk about EFF during the workshop sessions. I proposed, for example, a 2.5 hour workshop on teaching with the EFF standards and was given 45 minutes. Here are the sessions that I'm part of, and I hope others let us know about their sessions. Friday, 9:30-10:15: Using the EFF standards for teaching and assessing Saturday, 8:30-10:00: Using what matters with frameworks and standards (comparing EFF with what folks in NC and MA are doing with curriculum frameworks) Saturday, 2-2:45: The challenges of standards in adult ESL (a panel of people who had presented standards-related sessions will sum up the issues that were raised in their sessions and that shape their work) I'll also be part of a session on "Models for citizenship education and community action," which will reference but not focus on EFF (Weds. 2:00-3:45). What are other folks presenting and when do you think it makes sense to gather (and where)? And . . . if anyone else is staying at the Crown Plaza and plans to go to that first session, I'd be extremely grateful for help in getting the materials over to the conference site. I'm part way through "Exploring Equipped for the Future: A Program's Journey." I can't tell you how helpful this has been - kudos to all of you who forged a path for the rest of us. Here's my question: How many EFF involved people will be at TESOL? Will there be any ad hoc meetings, discussions, sharings, etc.? I'll be there from Monday until Saturday and will attend all sessions by Andy Nash, of course. Other than that the only thing I am completely locked into is the School for International Training Reunion on Friday evening. I'd love to meet with people. Thanks, Susan Rowley St. James ESL Program Seattle, WA Sjesl2@aol.com
