I've been an adult literacy educator at a Literacy Volunteers affiliate for five years (with a PH.D. in French, and experience in academics, which means squat nowadays) and I'm thinking of becoming certified. CT requires two courses if one wants to do BL and ESOL: a Special Education course, and a TESOL course (I'd be interested in presenting at TESOL, Andy, if I can meet the expenses: I have some Family Literacy stuff that is integrated with EFF, technology and employability as well as PACT activities). Then one has to to the Praxis (oh, joy! I'm math impaired). But I've also been looking into MA programs. Penn State has a long-distance adult ed masters which looks very intriguing and I understand from a friend who got her Ph.D. in Education there that they're very strong in community education. I want to hear more about what else is out there, the value of further schooling when one is about to turn from a 49er to a half century, and all the other issues of no money and little time.
