We have 20 videos and accompanying workbooks, along with a user's gudie that allows learners working at home to self assess and direct their own learning. We are currently constructing our web site. The shows are half hour magazine style formats, each with 5 or 6 segments that embed literacy in real life, entertaining contexts. For example, a sgement might show reading and writing in the context of preparing for a doctor's visit or filling out forms and applications, or math in consumer economics settings such as creating a budget or interpreting sale prices. We don't neglect the inspirational either; our show features book clubs with wonderful literature, poetry, and songwriting by ordinary folks and celebrities. The shows mdoel, explain and demonstrate literacy practices, while the workbooks provide structured opportunities for learners to try these things themselves. We are a not for profit, funded by the Ford and Lila Wallace foundations, with the states of North and South Carolina and United States Steelowrkers of America and participating steel companies joint labaor management funded program ( the Institute for Career Development) as partners.
