X-Listprocessor-Version: 6.0c -- ListProcessor by Anastasios Kotsikonas Content-Type: text/plain; charset=US-ASCII X-Mailer: Novell GroupWise 5.2 Status: O Content-Length: 1552 Lines: 28 Hello, I wonder if there are any folks who would be willing to talk about their work with group goal-setting or group discussion of individual goals. Most of our discussions about goal-setting have focused on an individualized process (teacher or counsellor sitting with students to identify, refine, or assess goals). This doesn't resonate with my own experience of identifying goals (for myself). I need to talk with others, hear what their goals are, and consider possibilities I never thought of. I know that whenever a workshop opens with a go-round of what we want to get out of the session (our "goals"), I've revised my goal three times by the time we get around the circle. Perhaps I'm just impressionable(!), but I believe that sharing and discussing what we're seeking - and why - is key to getting at a more-than-superficial vision. I am always challenged to think more reflectively when I compare my own purposes with those of others. This is different from getting affirmation or a reality check from a supportive listener, which feels good and helps me with practicality but doesn't help me consider the full set of options I really have. I am concerned that our strategies focus adults on setting "realistic" and achievable goals before they've had a chance to explore their larger purposes, and that we don't provide enough space for them to analyze the forces (social policy, family expectation, etc.) that are influencing their goals. Are these conversations happening somewhere? Thanks, Andy Nash NELRC/World Education EFF staff
