Assessments that are used only to guide the teaching-learning process don't have to meet as stringent standards for reliabilty as assessments that are intended for accountability purposes. In both cases, however, they need to meet standards of technical quality such as those laid out in Sri Ananda's publication HOW INSTRUCTORS CAN SUPPORT ADULT LEARNERS THROUGH PERFORMANCE-BASED ASSESSMENT. As that pubication makes clear, we believe that performance-based assessments are more congruent with EFF than are multiple choice tests because they focus on real world performance and require learners to construct their own responses rather than selecting from a range of responses. Ask for Publication Number: EX 0110P Written by Dr. Sri Ananda, an assessment specialist who has been providing technical assistance to the EFF development team, this paper provides an orientation to performance-based assessment. The report describes the key characteristics of effective performance-based assessments and discusses three major types of performance-based assessment, written scenarios, project assessments, and portfolio assessments. The other topics addressed in this report include: 1. scoring and reporting results on student performance; 2. developing performance-based assessment tasks and preparing students for them; and 3. the role of performance-based assessments in a comprehensive adult learner assessment system. This report is a first step in helping instructors understand how performance-based assessment tools can be used to measure progress relative to the EFF Content Standards.
