participating in the online book discussion group for that reason."

That's one of my goals too. In fact, eight of us have joined together to
analyze and discuss the EFF Content Standards book for this reason. Our first
reading selection covers pages 17-55 in chapter 3. We've agreed to finish it
in 4 weeks. Then we'll post our questions/perceptions about the text amoung
the eight of us. These initial messages will frame our discussion, which
we've configured like a link chain in order to evenly spread the exchange of
ideas. In other words, the first person will respond to whatever strikes her
in our collective postings. Then, going in alphabetical order, we'll take
turns responding to the responses to the responses...with a period of 24 hrs
inbetween each.

After we complete the first go-round, we will discuss how it went and how to
move our activities to the NIFL-4EFF list. (One of my interests in organizing
this group was to explore how an online EFF book group might contribute to
and generate discussion here on the NIFL-4EFF list.) We've all committed to
being part of three readings/dicussions and have tentatively identified our
second selection: pages 57-64 in Standards book with a focus on assessment.

Like some of the others in the book group, I'd like to be more conversant
about the standards - particularly about how they guide instruction and
support assessment. For that reason, I plan to approach my own particpation
in the book group as if I were a student in a classroom using the EFF
Standards to assess learning. The book group gives me the performance-based
learning activities I need to experiment using the standards. Well, at least,
that's the plan: to construct my own particpation so that I get hands-on
experience using the standards in order to learn about using them. I'll see
what happens.

As the online EFF book group continues to work together, we'll continue to
post updates here about what's going on.
