Thanks, Ronna ********************************** How does one ensure that the assessment used is tied to the standards one is using in the classroom? For example, if standards have been developed specifically for a state, as they have in Arizona, how does one make sure that the assessment chosen is appropriate to what the state and the program need to know? This would seem to be especially problematic if the test being used is a standard assessment such as TABE or ABLE and the standards have been developed based on the needs or goals of the state. What are your feelings about the validity of portfolio assessment in the adult basic education classroom? If done correctly, does it potentially provide more validity than a standardized test, in that it truly tests that which the instructor and the student have set as goals and objectives? Also, regarding the comments in the first question about statewide standards, is it more likely that portfolio (again, if done correctly) could be more closely tied to the state standards than a standardized test? Finally, do you know of any programs/states that are using portfolio in ABE? List the pros and cons, in your opinion, of traditional and performance-based assessments. Does performance-based assessment have any place in the ABE classroom, or is it so time, money, and resource intensive that it negates the potential benefits? Thank you for your assistance.
