A group of us are currently involved in an EL/Civics grant under EFF. My class is an intermediate level ESL. Our project is reading to elementary ESL students. We prepare a children's book, concentrating on reading and speaking skills as per the EFF standards, and then read it to the elementary class. Some of my students have children in this elementary school. We are focusing on the student as a member of the community. EFF is all about student-centered teaching. It is about getting the students more involved in their communities, their families. It's about letting them determine what they are interested in doing. It can be very exciting and invigorating for the teacher as well as the students.
