However, 1700 people attended the National Conference and we are aware of the many variations in program structure and content. Perhaps some people are aware of the "profiles" of family literacy, but we are interested in showing the "full face" of family literacy to the thousands of people who are interested in this phenomenon. We invite people to share differing views and ideas for addressing the issues that families bring into programs. Dr. Meta Potts has agreed to be our "discussion facilitator" for this week. Many of you are very familiar with Meta already, so this will be like "old home week." Meta Potts served as Director of Adult Learning Services for the National Center for Family Literacy, as the first NCFL Director of the NCFL Family and Child Education Program for the Bureau of Indian Affairs and as Director of Training Research and Development before she moved to Phoenix, Arizona, in 1998. She heads her own consulting business, Literacy FOCUS. Federal Definition of Family Literacy Services: "Services that are of sufficient intensity in terms of hours, and of sufficient duration to make sustainable changes in a family and that integrate all of the following activities: * Interactive literacy activities between parents and their children * Training for parents regarding how to be the primary teacher for their children and full partners in the education of their children * Parent literacy training that leads to economic self-sufficiency * An age-appropriate education to prepare children for success in school and life experiences."
