It's recently come to light that the NALS was seriously flawed, and that the statics drawn from it are not credible. In other words, we can't really point to the famous "1 in 5" statistic as sound research. It will be very interesting to see how the new NAAL is designed and carried out, and how it will influence the framing of the field of adult literacy and learning.
