I asked my adult learners what "transparent" means to them. They gave several examples and used many words that describe the word transparent/transparency. Many of them said that it means "clear and see through." I then asked them what the word means when it comes to their education, including a quote taken from one of the messages posted on the list serv. They gave lots of feedback and several adult learners gave their take on the word and its meaning that I found helpful. I made sure to write these comments down word for word: "It means, I'll tell you what I'm about, what I want and need, and that means you help me get there." Another student said: "It's about listening and talking. You have to listen to us, like what we need, and then you explain what we can do and I decide." We continued the conversation about the word "transparent." One adult learner summed it up in their own words: "It's all about communication. Don't hide it from me. You need to talk to me and I need to talk with you. Y'all need to tell us what you know and we need to tell you what we know." Just thought I give some insight from the gang that cares the most. One last comment from me: I took another step toward trasparency when I shared some more "teacher talk" with my learners.
