I am new to the literacy field, having spent the last ten years in public library services to children. My six months of introduction to adult literacy leads me to many, many questions--and I hope that you might be able to assist me with the largest looming on my horizon. In Nevada there is a citizen/gov agency advisory board, the State Council on Libraries and Literacy. Along with the SCLL, I have invited representatives from several literacy organizations, including ABE directors, to attend a work session to develop our state "action agenda" using Margins to the Mainstream and the NSCALL script. Additionally our governor has selected "Leading for Literacy" as the theme for his chairmanship of the Education Commission for the States this year, with these objectives: The ECS Leading for Literacy Initiative has three main objectives: Educate policymakers about the literacy problem and the research on what to do about it Provide state leaders with the policy options, models and tools needed to tailor a plan to address the state's specific needs Help states create integrated action plans that can lead to significant improvement in reading. I have visited all the public libraries in our state and distributed copies of EFF Content Standards. Can I ask for a copy (or web address) for your State Plan...Do you feel your plan addresses the objectives of the ECS project? Am I trying to do too much to combine these three? Thank you for your assistance. Susan Graf NV Literacy Coalition 100 North Stewart Carson City, NV 89701 775 684 3340; FAX 3344 sfgraf@clan.lib.nv.us
