One of the things Jane talked about when she was with us was how published materials and textbooks sometimes serve as the framework around which teachers organize instruction. Some years ago, when Jane asked her teachers to plan lessons without using textbooks, some of the teachers struggled because without their textbooks they had no framework for organizing their teaching. Over the years, Jane has replaced the textbook framework in her program with a well developed system for using EFF as a framework. Jane's teachers now use EFF effectively to plan lessons tied to adult learners goals and purposes for learning. While I agree with Jane that textbooks should not serve as the exclusive framework for curriculum, I think they can still be quite helpful. Are there certain textbooks or materials that list members have found to be particularly EFF friendly for ESOL instruction? for ABE? What suggestions or cautions would you offer regarding the use of published materials? Susan Finn Miller Southeast Professional Dev. Ctr.
