In my first posting on this topic I mentioned that the next step would be to turn to the standards. So here is where I left off: It would be important to talk with students about their goals but then share the standards with them. Help them to see how the standards could help them get their GED and be successful in their lives. To help learners see more value in EFF and what it has to offer, introduce them to some of the communication standards and the decision making standards. Getting a GED is a valid goal and a real purpose. Students will relate quickly to these particular group of standards and will value the information. Working one on one or coming to consensus as a group, choose a particular standard to discuss. Every standards page includes the four purposes access, voice, action, and bridge to the future, the three roles worker, family, community, and the activities that are common in all three roles. There could be a discussion of the roles and the use of the standard within different activities. There could be a discussion about how the strategies may change for different activities and that the standards are based on the purpose and use of the standard. Go over each component of the standard(focusing on getting the GED) ask them to clarify their purpose for using the standard, how to build knowledge of the standard, and how they can use the standard. It would also be important to talk about how to reflect on the use of the standard. Let the student know that each standard includes a component for reflection and evaluation/continuous improvement. Talk to them about the importance of reflection and improvement. Three standards that pop out to me are Read with Understanding, Convey Ideas in Writing, and Plan. For example: Look at the Convey Ideas in Writing standard and relate it to the GED essay. The standard is the process that they will need to take in order to write an effective essay. Ask them to think of tools or strategies for doing each component. We've been talking a lot about goal setting and the Five Why's. Jeffrey's use of the Five Why's would also be helpful when discussing components of standards. Asking why each component is important and how they do it would work well. Also help learners to think about how they can document what they are learning and using in the classroom and how they can translate the skill of writing to their lives as family members, workers and citizens. The strategies may change depending on the purpose of using the standard but the components are transferrable in any context. Ask learners to critically think about the components: example: what would happen if we took out component three? One last thought: I can't tell you how many times I have given an L level TABE test and the student scores low on the test - not because they can't read or don't know their vowels-but because they aren't listening actively to the oral directions. Many of our learners need to see that skill use isn't isolated. Other skills like Listening, Observing Critically, Taking Responsibility for learning go hand in hand with the GED.
