I asked myself how I had used this skill successfully as a worker. I looked at the components of performance for “Learn Through Research”. (I've noted these in bold.) At work, when I needed to pose a question to be answered about the financial system, my biggest challenge was the possibility of being overwhelmed. To minimize this, I broke my larger question into pieces. When I answered the smaller questions, other questions were answered along the way. So, as a citizen, I've chosen to break my original question (identify the system that affects my issue) into smaller, more specific questions. At work, I used multiple lines of inquiry to collect information by asking co-workers, the Purchasing Dept., and my boss specific questions. I used physical resources, such as handbooks. And I tried new things, learning from both mistakes & successes. So, as a citizen, I've used the Internet as a resource, have ordered physical resources to assist me, and have chosen several people to talk to who have knowledge of this area. At work, I organized, evaluated, analyzed & interpreted findings by documenting what I learned as I went so I could refer to it when a question arose in the future. I looked for exceptions to rules & commonalities between situations. So, as a citizen, I'll document my findings. I'll try to find out if the process I'm researching always stays the same or if there are exceptions. And I will look for critical points in the system to find out how that might affect my participation.
