Last week's test run of the attachment filter went well and it's being implemented tomorrow, 6/18, on all NIFL discussion lists. Implementation of this filter will greatly reduce the possibility of virus infected messages being passed through the discussion lists. It will similarly reduce the possibility of virus infected messages being part of the archives. File attachments will no longer be allowed through the discussion lists once the filter is in place. The filter will also enforce the "plain text messages only" rule. Email messages sent as MIME attachments or HTML mail will be rejected (these types of emails include the message body as an attachment...hence the filter rejects them). If you send messages as or with attachments you will receive a notice from the list server advising you that attachments are not permitted and that you should resend your messages as "plain text" messages. Please note that while we have attempted to remove the infected messages from the listserver archive, virus infected messages may currently exist in the archives. If you have your subscription set to DIGEST format you may receive infected messages when the next digest format message is sent from the list server - so beware. Once the filter is in place tomorrow, infected messages shouldn't make it into the list server archives (or the on-line HTML archives for that matter). And we will attempt to remove the infected messages from the list server archive, once and for all. If you have any questions ask: (202) 233-8767 or Ronna.Spacone@ed.gov Thanks, Ronna Ronna G.
