An update on EFF activities--

There are now more than 650 members on the 4EFF List. Some have been on for
years, but others have recently joined. It seems relevant to bring everyone
up to date on the current status and activities of the EFF Initiative.

As part of the National Institute for Literacy in Washington, DC, the EFF
Initiative is led by Dr. Sondra Stein and overseen by an EFF National Policy
Group.

The EFF Center for Training and Technical Assistance is located within the
Center for Literacy Studies, University of Tennessee, in Knoxville, TN. Here
is where co-directors, coordinators and facilitators manage the activities
that are designed to educate, train and provide technical assistance.
Current special projects include the EFF/NCFL Reading Project, EFF/National
Urban League Program Improvement Project, and the development of an online
Teaching/Learning Toolkit. Training modules are in development for the EFF
Standards: Read With Understanding and Use Math to Solve Problems and
Communicate.

Approximately 75 people are part of the EFF Facilitator network, many working
toward state or national EFF Trainer Certification. Some will train and
advise in their own states, and others will work on a national scale.

The Center for Literacy Studies is also a partner in the EFF Assessment
Consortium with SRI, International, based in California and Washington, DC.
The Assessment Consortium is developing the prototype for the EFF assessment
system (based on the Read With Understanding standard) and is coordinating
the development of a national Work Readiness Credential based on the EFF
Standards. A Technical Advisory group guides the work of the Consortium; a
Policy Oversight Council composed of state agency partners and technical
advisors oversees the development of the Work Readiness Credential.

Currently, field research partners in five states are piloting RWU
performance assessment tasks that can be used for instructional and
accountability purposes.

It seems fair to say that the sun never sets on EFF activities. We are
always working on program improvement.

Please let us know how we can help you to understand and use EFF tools and
products.
