Hi Meta,

Just a really quick initial response to this posting. This Grade 3 to
4/learning to read-->reading to learn spot is also where we begin detecting the
presence of Scotopic Sensitivity Syndrome, and it would not surprise me to find
that the majority of these late-emerging reading difficulties have some level of
SSS involved. We include a survey and initial pre-screening for this condition
in our program's intake. Fortunately, another adult ed program, about an hour's
drive away, has a teacher who is trained in the overlay screening, so we are
able to remediate a number of our students fairly easily. This condition seems
to be familial, and has been a player in the "reverse diagnosis" we have had to
do for parents with low reading skills who have children receiving special
educational services in school. It would certainly play a part in parents
supporting their children's education, perhaps advocating for intervention or at
least, in a better (perhaps personal) understanding of their children's learning
issues.

As for the RWU connections, I haven't systematically researched the connection
between our experience with SSS and the standard directly, opting to include
what we know about the potential effect on student ability to comprehend at the
"adjust strategies" level. But I am more curious now, having read the posting.

For people not familiar with Scotopic Sensitivity Syndrome, I would refer you to
the Irlen Institute website <http://www.irlen.com> and Helen Irlen's excellent
book, "Reading By The Colors," Avery Publishing Group, Garden City Park, NY, ©
1991, ISBN 0-89529-482-6. Diagnosis and remediation has been transformative for
quite a few of our students.
