The Spring 2002 issue of Hot Topics outlined a 10-step EFF Teaching and
Learning Cycle that was constructed from the experience of many EFF
teachers and field researchers. The Cycle describes a teaching process
that addresses the EFF Standards and applies the EFF principles. EFF
staff used this cycle as the basis for drafting a Teaching and Learning
Toolkit (to be available through the EFF website late in August), which
was then reviewed by dozens more practitioners over the past year.

That review yielded several suggested changes, including a
reorganization of Cycle steps 1-4. Based on the recommendations, we have
revised the Cycle to more accurately describe the goals/needs/strengths
assessment that typically occurs at the beginning of the process, and
have clustered the Cycle into four stages: preparation, planning,
carrying out the plan, and reflection.

The original first four steps:
1. Determine individual goals and purposes.
2. Identify standards that would help learners achieve their goals.
3. Find out what learners already know.
4. Come to consensus on a shared priority that focuses the learning
activity if working in a group.

. . . . have become:

Preparation
1. Determine individual learner's goals and purposed and identify the
Standards that will help him/her achieve them. Identify student's prior

knowledge about these goals and Standards.

2. In a group, identify a shared interest, purpose or goal and
determine
the group's prior knowledge of this topic. Identify the Standard that
will
help the group address this shared goal. Make clear the connection
between the class focus and individuals' needs.

. . . . followed by:

Planning
3. Design a learning activity to address the real-life concerns of the
learner(s).
4. Develop a plan to capture evidence and report learning.

Carrying out the Plan
5. Carry out the activity.
6. Observe and document evidence of performance on the standard.

Reflection
7. Evaluate and reflect on how what was learned is transferable to
real-life situations.
8. Determine next steps to help learners meet their goals. (Return to
Step 1 or 2).

For a downloadable version of the new cycle, please go to the
"Downloadable Masters" section of the EFF Special Collection at
http://www.nifl.gov/lincs/collections/eff/eff_masters.html.

I'll post another message to announce the on-line Teaching and Learning
Toolkit when it's up. The Toolkit will be a growing resource that
includes examples of the EFF Cycle being used in many different contexts
as well as specific teaching tools to support each stage of the Cycle.
