Colleagues,

This message is a crosspost, written by Sylvie Kashdan, and the subject is the
quality of English/language arts instruction at all educational levels. She
refers us to the National Council Teachers of English statement, which can be
found in greater detail on the WEB at this address.

http://www.ncte.org/profdev/onsite/readinit/groups/cc/111131.htm

The document, from which there is an excerpt below, is entitled, "NCTE: The
Voice of Literacy." The description of what literacy education is all about
sounds very much like Equipped for the Future.

NCTE ensures that literacy is every citizen's inalienable right.

As such, NCTE is dedicated to protecting the profession by improving the
quality of English/language arts instruction at all educational levels.

Specifically, the Council promotes the study and teaching of literacy as a
tool of inquiry and learning, as a means of aesthetic and cultural
understanding, and as an inalienable first right to full participation in a
democratic and diverse society.

NCTE's core values and member benefits focus on:

*writing-as a tool for learning, thinking, and communication
*literature-using trade books and quality literature across the curriculum
*integrated language arts-including reading, writing, speaking, listening, as
well as viewing, interpreting, and creating media
*diversity-abhorring censorship while valuing difference, multiple forms of
literacy, and students' rights to their own language
*knowledgeable professionals-supporting quality programs of teacher education
and effective forms of professional development where teachers' voices are
heard
*advocacy-for students, teachers, the English/language arts and the
profession, and quality public education and assessment-supporting quality
assessment and inclusive instruction which puts students first and is run in
such a way that teachers can teach and students can learn. *

Sylvie also suggests a book:

Beyond Reading and Writing: Inquiry, Curriculum, and Multiple Ways of
Knowing
Authors: Beth Berghoff, Kathryn A. Egawa, Jerome C. Harste, Barry T. Hoonan

We are interested in your perspectives on these perspectives.

All the Best,
