For example, a student needs to learn to write effective letters, reports,
essays, or other types of writing in their worker, family, and citizen
roles. As part of the standard Convey Ideas in Writing
the component Pay attention to conventions of English Language usage
includes correct usage of the comma. The comma is an area this student does
not understand, so the learning activities must include teaching correct
usage of the comma. The curriculum list uses comma correctly as part of a
checklist. Therefore I began with what the student wanted to achieve and
used correct comma usage as one of the steps to reach this goal. I began
with the goal and need then used the curriculum to design the learning
activities.
