The Literacy*AmeriCorps Capacity Builders Program of the National Alliance of Urban Literacy Coalitions is engaging people to help create the solid infrastructure for literacy service delivery that is necessary for the systemic change to support 100% literacy in this country. Work with coalitions at the local level or with the national organization headquartered in Houston. This one-year, national service program is hiring full-time (1700 hours/year) members for the 2004 program year. Literacy*AmeriCorps members will work on a daily basis to increase the capacity of coalitions by bringing powerful stakeholders to the table, cultivating funding opportunities and resources for service activities; coordinating public awareness campaigns, conducting needs assessments and other surveys; creating and improving organizational systems; managing volunteers through recruiting, training, supporting and recognizing them; and serving as liaisons between coalitions and service providers. Literacy*AmeriCorps members earn a $9,900 stipend and upon completion of their service term, a $4,725 education award that can be used to pay tuition or student loans. Healthcare, childcare, and loan forbearance is available for those who qualify. All members receive yearlong training. The program starts January 2004.
