On the topic of ethical issues in ESOL, Jean writes:
Here's the question: Review the research on ethics and multiculturalism.
Identify several educational models related to the acculturation process in
working with multicultural adult literacy students. Evaluate and analyze the
critical ethical issues facing literacy teachers in their work with culturally
diverse students.

Jean,

I would encourage you to look into language and discipline (of children)
issues, too. I won't elaborate, hoping that other experienced ESOL teachers will
expand upon this.

Your question seems to include another area of multicultural education, which
you might want to include in your paper: American Indian Adult Education.

Here is one example: When we were conducting the research on the EFF Role
Maps, we visited American Indian programs. Most of the participants in those
focus groups insisted that we include something about spirituality on the Family
Role Map under the Broad Area of Responsibility which states, Strengthen the
Family System. This presented a dilemma as others deemed "spirituality" to call
up the realm of religion, an unsafe topic. The final draft does not use the
word, spirituality, but reads: Promote values, ethics, and cultural heritage.

How many adult education programs nationwide do promote these three aspects
of family life and in what ways? Do adult education teachers shy away from
these because of implicit ethical issues?

Best of luck with the paper. It sounds like quite an interesting project.

All the Best,

Meta Potts, Moderator 4-EFF List
