Most of my students can read aloud, however, several fail to comprehend the meaning of the text or understand the inferences presented in the text. How does one develop the comprehension levels of students? I know there are many approaches to successful teaching, however if you could provide experiences you have found successful, it would be of benefit to me. I know about the Read With Understanding Standards. Also, I am familiar with concept maps, the cloze techniques, semantic maps, think aloud techniques, self-questioning techniques, metacognitive strategies, vocabulary development, phonemic awareness, and the list of strategies outlined on page 97 of the Research Based Principles and ABE Reading Instruction Guide. The Reading with Understanding Diary and Read With Understanding Guide also appears it will be of use. However, I was wondering if anyone could provide examples of how several of the tools available can effectively be presented in the GED classroom. Also, I am in search of effective software that develops students' comprehension. Sincerely, Al Alba, Ph.D.
