What a nice essay.  I joined the NLA when I was feeling very shaky about adult literacy, and David  Rosen  welcomed me and gave me a boost.  So I agree with you 100% about the list servs. 

I have been thinking recently about metaphors, too.  We talk about marginalized people and  that seems to make a lot of sense.

What I am also seeing is a net, like those computer generated diagrams say  of topographic features.  Except my net  shows little  peoople plunging through holes of a broken weave.

I've got to leave that for now as I am supposed to be somewhere else.
