Colleagues:

What helped me was something that I heard Sondra Stein say a couple of years
ago: that the various components of the EFF Framework were developed as part
of the Research & Development process on the way to identifying content
standards. They turned into teaching tools when teachers in the field were
validating different aspects of the
framework for research purposes and reported that the pieces were useful in
designing and implementing meaningful, adult-oriented instruction.

Yes, Amy, thank you for this beautiful explanation of all those heavy terms
in the EFF Framework.

I attempted to explain that very thing to a group not long ago, and I added
this: Those of us who have been in the EFF fold for many years have our
favorite components. It seems to depend upon when we came into the process. And
because of this reality, we tend to include the whole framework in our
discussions as though each piece somehow tightens the loops and holds our shoes on. Not
so.

As you so artfully state:
To me, the basics of being an EFF teacher are to 1) teach the EFF Content
Standards 2) through approaches that build expertise by being purposeful,
transparent, contextualized, and assessment-based. The EFF TEACHING & LEARNING
CYCLE, with embedded use of role maps and/or common activities, can help us do that.

BTW, George includes a similar explanation in Chapter 7 of his book.

All the Best,

Meta Potts, Moderator 4-EFF List
