I attempted to explain that very thing to a group not long ago, and I added this: Those of us who have been in the EFF fold for many years have our favorite components. It seems to depend upon when we came into the process. And because of this reality, we tend to include the whole framework in our discussions as though each piece somehow tightens the loops and holds our shoes on. Not so. As you so artfully state: To me, the basics of being an EFF teacher are to 1) teach the EFF Content Standards 2) through approaches that build expertise by being purposeful, transparent, contextualized, and assessment-based. The EFF TEACHING & LEARNING CYCLE, with embedded use of role maps and/or common activities, can help us do that. BTW, George includes a similar explanation in Chapter 7 of his book.
