I'm responding to George Demetrion's message about the changes (purges) to ERIC and NIFL archived discussions. Where has the NLA archive gone, and why? For the members of the PD list, do professional development facilitators have any role in contributing to defining or expanding the boundaries of the adult literacy profession? Is it within the facilitator's purview to initiate or participate in discussions about advocacy, or about the connections between teaching, literacy education, and maintaining or changing social, economic, and political conditions? I know an educator who is from Chile, and who worked there during the early Pinochet years. She says that teachers then believed they had a responsibility to be active in resisting the Pinochet regime. How do educators and professional development facilitators see their role? Finally, I'd like to respond to George's challenge by posting a critical comment that is protected under the First Amendment (and is certainly disrespectful of religious fanatics, though I hope not of all the faithful): God told me George Bush is a moron. Sincerely, Eileen Eckert From: "George E. Demetrion" <sophocles5@juno.com> Reply-To: aaace-nla@lists.literacytent.org To: aaace-nla@lists.literacytent.org Subject: [AAACE-NLA]ERIC Date: Tue, 29 Apr 2003 08:26:40 -0700 Tom and others: I was looking through the NIFL archives for an earlier response to the ERIC issue. One that someone wrote was particularly good in showing what would be gained and lost (the good and bad news) by the proposed changes None of that matters now as it appears that all references to the ERIC matter as well as all references to US foreign policy have been removed from the NIFL lists, and as part of the disappearing act, the NLA archives have been removed from the NIFL discussion board. While there are certain efficiencies in the proposed new ERIC revision as you state, there's a lot more going on too, which in my view has to do with a not so subtle effort to eradicate any and all vestiges of educational theory and research which does not comport the administration's views. I',I'm wondering if the scientists would like to weigh in here and comment on the back room politics of literacy antics going on right now in Washington, DC Anyone want to deal with this? Anyone dare to post a critical message on any of the NIFL lists? Anyone concerned? Anyone want to do something about it? Soon!! Oh, one final thought. President Bush believes he is called by God at this time in the nation's history to renew the American spirit and will. Perhaps it's God's will that these topics should be erased from the NIFL lists and ERIC transformed. Just a thought.
