I may have been unclear. I believe there is a fairly large literature on this point from sociological and historical sources--Weber being an oft cited name. Simple examples: Christmas as a holiday for all, also the 4th of July andTthanksgiving. Thanksgiving began as a day of thanks to the deity, and has evolved into a multicultural holiday scross the United States. However, it could be argued that the country is moving in the direction of a theocracy, mirroring in some of its policies the overtly explicitly religious policies of theocracies that we are familiar with in other parts off the world. As for other religions, the towns around where I live close their school doors on religious holidays for non-Protestants when there are sufficient numbers of school families to justify this--grassroots religious freedom. I am shocked, though, that you rhetorically ascribe to me views that align with "religious fascism." I represent a "large and living seed of destruction?" This strikes me as a strange way to hold a conversation (satire aside) but styles differ. How is "freedom of religion" understood in adult literacy classrooms? By the way, I was too sharp on this point in one of my emails yesterday, and I apologize if I offended any subscriber, it was unintentional. Andrea
