In fact, I rarely respond to any of them, and they never respond to my messages. Most of my messages are responses to people that I do not even know. One of my frustrations with the NLA had to do with too much talk about policy and not enough about practice. Of course, to me, practice relates to policy. In this listserve, I have only talked about practice, and I have limited myself to respond to questions from others, rather than to initiate new conversations. I have talked about the merits of phonics vs. sight word, vs. holistic instruction. I have talked about the importance of making real life topics central to the discussion that goes on in the classrooms. All this relates directly to practice. Since I am not from your state, I have no idea what type of practice is mandated there. However, nobody is being forced not to post topics of interest and bringing them up for discussion. However, the discussions will encompass a broad range of topics and not a few topics that teachers in Pennsylvania may be interested in, that only relate to the state practices. There are actually list-serves in which teachers can only discuss one model. For example, you have EFF devoted to that model alone. If people in Pennsylvania would like to discuss practices that relate to one specific model and one specific state, they should create a separate listserve for their needs. I do extensive professional development on instructional practices. I have also taught for many years. Instruction in our program is based on the things that I have been articulating. In essence, the fact that some people may feel that what I am posting does not relate to practice does not make this so. It only shows people's lack of knowledge of best practices in the field. This is why we should continue to post. At the same time, if you disagree with the practices that I encourage, I would invite you to disagree with me on pedagogical grounds. This would be useful to all of us. I would also be interested in the practices that are encouraged in your state. As I said before, this is a listserve in which different discussions and views are shared. People participate in those that they are interested in. I would like to know what exactly in my messages does not relate to practice. Labeling something philosophical is not a valid way to dismiss its content.
