We ended the session by asking participants to brainstorm a list of their needs, questions, and concerns about conducting professional development that supports using research to build evidence-based practice. Here is their list. It raises a lot of interesting things to ponder. Where can you find the research that does exist? Identifying sources of funding for professional development -- where is it? How do you evaluate the research you do find? Is there some way to provide advocacy for professional development? "Cliff notes" for research? Connecting teachers with other teachers and researchers interested in the same problem -- how? Connecting policy to professional development -- policy prioritizes the professional development that gets done. Ways to help teachers write down what they know? Ways to share information on successful models, lesson isolation? Beth Bingman Associate Director, Center for Literacy Studies Coordinator for NCSALL Projects
