The Commonwealth of Virginia has two strong and successful initiatives to provide support for new teachers.  The first is appropriately entitled "The New Teacher Orientation Program".  It's divided into two sections:  Adult Education teachers and ESOL teachers.  Program managers register their new teachers by an online process. The Virginia Adult Learning Resource Center (VALRC) processes these registrations, sends out a welcoming email to the new teachers, includes them in a listserv just for them, sends each one our ESOL Starter Kit, and organizes and delivers specialized workshops for the teachers.  The program lasts for one year for the cohort of new teachers.  Please see more about this at:  http://www.aelweb.vcu.edu/about/programs/newteacher.shtml

The second initiative is a three-day summer institute called the ESOL Institute for New Practitioners.  This is open to all new teachers in Virginia.  At the institute there are two strands:  one for new teachers/tutors/instructors and another strand for program managers that might be starting classes for ESOL students. The workshops include:  How Adults Learn Languages, Teaching and Assessing Oral Skills, Teaching Reading and Writing, Instructional Planning for Teachers, Instructional Planning for Tutors and three separate sessions for Program Planning.  A highly qualified team of experts in ESOL designed the materials and are the instructors.  Evening activities including participating in a cross-cultural simulation game, BaFa BaFa, or watching a movie, EL Norte, or "Dining in Naples", are part of the program.

        Subject:        [NIFL-AALPD:846] new teacher orientation

Good morning, All,
A list subscriber asked that I pose these questions and she was hoping to gain
your feedback on them:

"What are some initiatives other states have implemented to provide support
for new teachers?  What have others done and what are some ideas for new
teacher orientation?  What should a new teacher orientation include?
Teachers, what would have been helpful for you to know as a new teacher of
adult literacy and basic education?"

Thanks,
Jackie Taylor
