Those statistics, in several forms, speak to a well established problem and 
not a scientific researched based justification for phonics only 
instruction,  Like others, I believe phonics is an essential aspect of the 
whole language approach, which is a living instructional model that uses 
what works.  The definition of whole language put forth by it's opponents 
focuses on a narrow definition decades old and does not take into account 
the model's pliability to adapt best practices, whether or not a particular 
interest group and zeitgiest sit outside my class and say, "Where's the 
research?"
My students learn.  You want proof, test them.  I've never been intimidated 
by evaluation.
