I ask that if you have a disagreement directed towards one individual, please take it off-list. While dissenting viewpoints from a broad range of perspectives are strongly encouraged on the list, they are encouraged "in a spirit of inquiry, curiosity, and mutual respect." It crosses the line when that dissent then becomes an attack on a very personal level in a public discussion forum. Be mindful that when someone vents on the list, it is an assault on everyone's senses. Who knows what kind of day each of us is having, and we then open an email with highly inflammatory remarks? Let us avoid adding to what may already be a stressful day for some. This reminder is not to be confused with expressing emotions on the list. There are many ways in which we can do so, and the list netiquette offers a few suggestions of things to you may wish to do, or avoid. I've pasted in the link below for easy reference. Bridging the "classic divide" between practice and research is not an easy task by any means, and can get very frustrating, I know. But as Bonnie said yesterday in regards to flaming, "Let's accord ourselves the same dignity as we do our students." I agree wholeheartedly.
