For all those who will be participating in the study group, here is a plan of action, that I would like to suggest. At this point, there will be all kinds of different ideas. However, in order to have some cohesiveness and defined purpose, I would like to suggest that we focus on the following. Unless someone is opposed, lets try to stick to this. If it doesn't work we'll modify it later. How about it?

Here is what I propose:

We read with four purposes in mind:

1: who is your audience: ie GED, ESL, pre GED, literacy, multilevel etc. Also what level of students in any of those categories.

2. mechanics of language: ie what language development activities would you develop, ie, phonics, short sentences, dictionary searches, summarizing, paraphrasing, dictation, answering multiple choice questions, changing to the past tense, using passive voice, writing compositions/paragraphs, pronunciation, etc

3. Content: what does the content do for you, do you agree, disagree, are you surprised, angry, how do your personal experiences relate to this, do you find it offensive, relationship to gender, ethnicity, etc.

4. pedagogical approach: ie, working alone, in groups, using technology, writing reports, MI theory, connecting to EFF, having debates, oral histories, doing artwork, having a revolution, etc.

I think that this is fairly comprehensive. If you have any ideas that you want to add, try to put them into those four groups, which were developed totally arbitrarily, by me, at the spur of the moment, trying to emulate (and hopefully getting support from) our current administration). What do you all think?

Andres

PS: If you don't agree, I'll get David Rosen to keep you all in line ;-)
