Apparently, there was some confusion about my last post. In the future, if
anyone has any questions about my intentions, I would appreciate if you would
ask.

Based on subscribers' suggestions, it was my sense that perhaps the members
wanted more freedom for this discussion than could happen on this list
(uploading documents, for example). Therefore, I suggested let's take *part*
of the discussion off-list, for this purpose, which also allows more freedom
for members who want to participate to do so to the intensity that they
desire, and in the least restrictive means possible.

Additionally, the PD-related portions of the discussion could be summarized as
others also suggested (and as I encouraged), and posted to this list for
further exploration. To carry this out to the fullest (which I did not mention
in my last post), the final results/implications for PD could be summarized
(given group interest), and I can ask NIFL to put it up on the NIFL-AALPD
discussion list home page (alongside any other NIFL-AALPD discussion
summaries). This is a democratic model serving the concerns of both interest
groups. The discussion on Evidence-Based Adult Education (EBAE), facilitated
by David Rosen, provides us another example.

Over 200 people signed up for the EBAE discussion -- hardly a marginalized
backwater -- that's more than are subscribed to some of the NIFL lists! Plus,
there is no end to the possibilities - the discussion could be announced on
all adult ed lists, summaries cross-posted regularly to NIFL-AALPD and/or put
up on the web, and we could develop a model on NIFL-AALPD exploring the
viability of study circles via listservs for online PD. However, I'm not
persuaded that reading a book on American history (from any perspective) and
discussing it fits the focus of the AALPD list -- discussion about adult
literacy professional development.

As a volunteer moderator, I'm *always* happy to do what I can on NIFL-AALPD,
but if we choose to split up the discussion into two forums (for the purpose
of having the freedom to explore the issues at greater depth), then "extra
help" is required. Andres mentioned he set up a yahoo discussion group; there
are also other free discussion venues on the web. I have also learned that
the discussion content from communityzero *can* be copied and saved before the
one month free trial runs out (I did not know that on Friday).

I do hope someone will take a leadership role on getting this discussion
started in a forum where these important issues can be explored in greater
depth, and not be restricted by this lists' purpose or guidelines. I
especially hope that all PD-related discussion will be either summarized or
cross-posted here for further exploration.

If someone is interested, or if a small circle of practitioners would be
willing to collaborate off-list regarding what we would need to do to initiate
this first discussion about Zinn's work, then please email me by the end of
the day. That way, subscribers will be able to find out if the discussion is
still *on*, and the rest of us can get excited about our reading assignments
and find our "best buys" (for those of us who have not done so already! :)

Thanks,

Jackie Taylor
