One logical way to go is simply to start the discussion on the assigned
chapters, say two weeks out, max. That could be on content, critical
analysis of the text as well as on the development of instructional models
for adult literacy and ESOL students.

Perhaps as the course progressed a few list members will specialize on
designing usable lessons and developing corresponding PD activities. At
this stage I don't think the discussion and the critical design issues
should be split as that can be overcumbersome, tending to derail the process
before it gets started.

My suggestion is to let er rip and then to work on structure and division of
labor issues as we go on. Obviously, some people are going to prefer to
work on critical text discussion and analysis and others will be more
interested in instructional design and corresponding PD activities. A
reasonable balance will be achieved if enough people with diverse
backgrounds take on the roles and areas of interest that suits them best.
