I am excited about the discussion, and raising the bar about the socio-political implications of adult literacy education. Thanks for moving ahead with this - will look forward to the start of the discussions. It becomes more and more important that we recognize our role in the struggles for equitable society, and that we engage both our community of ABE workers and our community of ABE learners. The response gives me hope for us all! You all are too fast for me! Mary Ann Corley and I have some good news for you. We've spent the last week exploring how we might collaborate regarding the idea of the Zinn book discussion activity. I am pleased to announce that we are going to host the Zinn book discussion on *both* the NIFL-POVRACELIT and NIFL-AALPD lists, this spring, after COABE (May). The purpose of having the activity on both lists would be to hold the initial discussion regarding Zinn's work on the NIFL-POVRACELIT list in the context of the history of the adult literacy/adult basic education movement in this country (as Sally Gabb mentioned last week) and how this history might be incorporated into teaching and learning activities. The second discussion would be held on NIFL-AALPD, and focused around incorporating lesson plans developed on the NIFL-POVRACELIT lists into training materials for professional development, as well as exploring other relevant discussion questions. Participants on both lists would be encouraged to reflect on how the history of adult literacy from the people's perspective might tie in with current events. If the group is really ambitious, teachers might try out some of the lessons they design, and give feedback. Lesson plans and training materials, if developed, could be put up on the web. Mary Ann and I will announce the specific guiding questions for the discussion, and other details as the time draws closer. This also allows the group time to acquire the reading materials and get started with the readings. I hope this plan suits both needs of NIFL-AALPD subscribers. Mary Ann and I will have more to share soon! Best, Jackie Taylor __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Get better spam protection with Yahoo! Mail. http://antispam.yahoo.com/tools
