Dear Folks,
Although I don't respond much, I enjoy reading about what is being done for professional development on the state and national levels. Could we discuss a little about professional development on the local level?

After teaching ESL for two years, I have become ESL coordinator for a small community college. It has become my responsibility to create a curriculum that will satisfy the state's mandates for a curriculum but I want something that is useful and valuable for the teachers.

We have many strengths and challenges. One of our challenges is that student attendance is not consistent and classes are generally multi-level, sometimes extremely so. This makes very problematic the development of course objectives for any particular class. What our strength is is that all our teachers are very experienced and we have a wide variety of material to choose from and they all do a good job of planning appropriate activities for their classes.

We have an upcoming ESL workshop and I am going to present a curriculum that we have worked on intermittently through the years, trying to get something nailed down.Any suggestions on the development of a curriculum that is specific enough to satisfy state mandates and flexible enough to accommodate varying groups of learners and varying styles among teachers? I'm addressing this to the AALPD listserve because I want the participation of all the teachers and I want your advice on the best way to do that.
Thanks a lot.
