Literacy Frees the World Tour Update

Colleagues: There has been a lot of interest in my 2004 literacy tour so I
have increased the number of presentations for the tour. Here is an
update as of March 5 of places, dates, and contacts for my 2004 tour of
free speeches and workshops. I look forward to seeing a lot of friends and
colleagues from various internet lists at these presentations which I
call:

LITERACY FREES THE WORLD:
Tom Sticht’s Mahatma Gandhi Lecture/Workshop Series for 2004

On September 8, 2003 UNESCO’s International Literacy Award was presented
for the 25th year. Earlier that year, on May 22, I completed my 25th year
as a member of UNESCO’s International Jury that meets each year to select
the winners of its literacy prizes. At a ceremony that day, Mr. Koïchiro
Matsuura, the Director-General of UNESCO presented UNESCO’s Mahatma Gandhi
Medal to me in recognition of my 25 years as a voluntary member of
UNESCO’s International Literacy Prize Jury.

This year, to celebrate 25 years of the International Reading Association
Literacy Award and my receipt of the Mahatma Gandhi Medal I am conducting
a speaking tour of locations in the United States, Canada, and the United
Kingdom to focus attention on the critical need for adult literacy
education around the world. With so much attention now being given by
government agencies and international organizations around the world to
accountability, measurable outcomes, standardized testing, and
"scientific" evidence-based programming, it is easy to lose sight of the
deeper meanings and purposes of adult literacy education. To focus on
this deeper meaning, I have based the theme for this tour on the January
6, 1941 event in which President Franklin D. Roosevelt addressed the U. S.
Congress and gave what has come to be known as the "Four Freedoms" speech.
In his speech, Roosevelt identified four freedoms that he considered to be
rights of people world wide: Freedom of Speech and Expression, Freedom of
Worship, Freedom from Want, and Freedom from Fear.

Also, during the decade of the 1940s, Mahatma Gandhi of India met at
different times with Frank Laubach and Welthy Honsinger Fisher of the
United States and convinced them to promote the spread of literacy as a
non-violent method to achieve freedom from colonization for the people of
India.

My 2004 tour celebrates the convergence of the launch in 2003 of the
United Nations Literacy Decade with its theme of Literacy as Freedom,
Gandhi’s advocacy of adult literacy education as a non-violent means of
achieving freedom for India, 25 years of the International Reading
Association’s Literacy Award, and my receipt of UNESCO’s Mahatma Gandhi
Medal. The tour includes keynote speeches and workshops organized around
the theme of FDR’s Four Freedoms. For those who may be interested in
