The materials may range from a Coke can (or STOP sign) to a medicine bottle to a short news article. The student then chooses one he/she can already read and one he/she would like to be able to read. I really liked this - the student has something he/she can read to show success and can select something that will meet his/her individual goals. This selection process is done after the instructor knows something about the student's reading level, so the material placed out for selection is already controlled for readability.
