I already went through a long a scientific explanation about why it was very important to incorporate phonics as well as other approaches into teaching. I sited extensive research on the brain to explain how it is that it processes language visually and auditively. i also explained that beyond simple decoding, the major gap was in making meaning.

the person that thinks that phonics is the only apporach is refusing to open up to the complexities of language acquisition and reducing it to only one component. this is either because he does not comprehend the research well, a limitation of learning only through phonics, or he has an agenda. In fact, this person sells a phonics program and promotes it in his emails. So, think about it. A person keeps posting messages that promotes phonics as the only way to teach language. In his signature he includes his website where you can actually buy his phonics program. In most discussion groups that I participate, this is called SPAM.

One of my suggestions to NIFL was that they set up a NIFL-Marketplace listserve. In this listserv salespeople from the different publishing companies could legitimately promote their stuff, and people needing books, etc, could post questions in that particular listserv. This would be very useful for teachers and program developers that sometimes are looking for texts. They could post messages in marketplace and different publishers could share their information. This would be very benefical to Tom, and he could peddle his stuff there and it wouldn't be considered spaming. So, I would like to request, highly recommend and insist that NIFL considers creating NIFL-Markeplace@nifl.gov.
