Hello All,

I am passing on an letter from Allan Quigley inviting you to take what
should be about20 to 30 minutes to participate in a survey on
professionalism in adult literacyincluding basic literacy, ABE, GED and ESL
teaching/tutoring in the term "adult literacy," here. This is an
opportunity to contribute to thinking about professionalization in our field.

The comments you provide will help in a couple of ways: 1) Allan is writing
a book on Literacy and Professionalism and expects the results will be used
in Chapter One in a summary form. Please note that your name will not
appear in the book or anywhere else except in the Acknowledgements section
of the book (or you can advise that you prefer not to have it appear there
either, see below). Secondly, depending on the response to this request,
Allan and I are thinking of an article on literacy and professional
development. The same anonymity conditions would apply.

This survey is going to practitioners in both the U.S. and Canada. In the
U.S., those who volunteer through this note to the Association of Adult
Literacy Professional Developers Listserv <nifl-aalpd@literacy.nifl.gov>
will be the participants. The Canadian participant contacts came from the
office of the Movement for Canadian Literacy (thanks to Wendy Desbrisay and
Fiona Murray). If you have questions or concerns with the survey, our
e-mail addresses can be found at the bottom of this message and please
don't hesitate to contact us.

Allan's letter follows this note.

Thanks again!

Beth Bingman

Dear Literacy Colleague:

My name is Allan Quigley and I am a Professor of Adult Education at St.
Francis Xavier University in Nova Scotia, Canada. I am currently engaged in
writing a book on Literacy and Professionalism with Krieger Publishing. The
tentative title is "Building Professional Pride in Adult Literacy." This
note is to invite you to share your views on professionalism and adult
literacy (here, this is including basic literacy, ABE, GED Preparation, and
ESL/EFL) through a survey questionnaire I have prepared.

It shouldn't take much more than 20 30 minutes to complete and it can be
returned by e-mail. I am hoping to hear from basic literacy, ABE, GED and
ESL teachers, tutors, and administrators. The comments you provide will be
synthesized and used in Chapter One to give a sense of some of the views
held by a number of literacy practitioners in the USA and Canada.

I need to add that, as a professor at a major university, both faculty and
graduate students we are required to follow Research Ethics guidelines in
any research. If you express interest and you reply (and I hope you will),
you will receive by e-mail a "Procedures Letter" and the "Survey Form" itself.

The survey can be completed and returned by e-mail. The Procedures Letter
will explain in more detail that your name will not appear in the book or
anywhere else, including any oral or printed presentations. However, in the
event you would like your name to appear in the Acknowledgements Section of
the book, and subject to how the publisher handles this section of the
book, you need only request that your name appear and mail back a hard copy
of a form to be attached to the Letter of Procedure. This form will include
a request for your name to be printed clearly as you want it to appear, and
signed, giving Approval to Add My Name in the book. If I am allowed to
include it by the publisher, I will. Again, whether you want your name in
the Acknowledgments of not, your name will appear no where else and, should
this book go to further editions or translations, you will again be
contacted for further approvals to include your name.

Secondly, if you want a summary copy of the outcomes of this survey, you
need only request it along with your completed reply to the Survey
Questionnaire

Please note that you can opt out of this survey at any point by e-mailing,
phoning, or faxing me. Further, if you decide to have your name in the
Acknowledgements, you can withdraw this agreement too at any time by
e-mailing, phoning, or faxing me and I will stay in touch so you know when
the book is to be printed, allowing you to know the last date to withdraw
your name, if you so choose. All collected survey data will be kept under
lock and key by me, the Principal Investigator, in event of inquires, for a
five year period after the publication of the book, then all data will be
destroyed.

This invitation is going to practitioners in both the U.S. and Canada using
Listservs.. It is will be sent in both RTF and Word to accommodate as many
software programs as possible.

If you have any questions or concerns with this study, at any point, please
just send me a return note, or one to Beth. Our e-mail addresses, phone
number and fax will be found at the bottom of every communiqué, including
this one, so please don't hesitate to contact me at any point.

Thanks again and I hope to hear from you.

Allan
