The concept seems very broad and elastic. A reading professional I consulted yesterday explained it to me in a way I could understand. She compared critical literacy to what a child often does when asked to tell what happened in a story--recite details ad infinitum. What you want is a summary--main point and highlights. The professional hooked this skill to comprehension. At the adult level, we can hook into Piaget and holding variables constant, which he thought the highest intellectual ability (pinch of snuff on that) Fischer goes through the stages of growth, links it to the brain, when a child can finally get to the Piaget "stage." Another cut on the problem is from a book, "Developing Reflective Judgment," which traces levels in this ability and provides examples, and even an assessment, I think. I was able to make the jump to Ah ha! Critical literacy is the adult's form of comprehension. Personally, I was able to move from brain science to thinking behavior, to an understanding of the fifth reading component. I think this must be built from vocabulary knowledge and complex syntax. You add the social component. A psychiatrist I know thinks we learn most when in interaction with others. I'll study what you wrote. The concept is becoming clearer. Andrea
