Jackie,

I think Ilene has got it exactly right, whether it is possible to realize it or not, considering that the field uses many volunteers as teachers:

1) An academic and hands-on background
2) Be taught how to deal with students who have learning anxieties

I reach these conclusions both from my own background and from several years of reading the lists--questions teachers and administrators have posed, and frustrations they have voiced when due to lack of funds they are not able to get the proper training.

Those who have had the training/education/experience have talked of an almost before and after experience.

I refer in particular to emails by Anne Murr, Art LaChance, Nancy Hansen, and Debbie Yoho mostly on the aaace-nla list serv. There have been others particularly in November and December on the LD list serv.

Andrea
