Within a state it may depend on what kind of organization the teachers work in. In Massachusetts, a few public school-sponsored adult education programs have bargaining units which include some adult education teachers, and a few community-based organizations have been organized. Getting adult education teachers to be part of a bargaining unit is complicated by the diversity of program providers and the part-time status of so many adult education teachers. I know that in Texas some adult education is delivered through community colleges. Also through public schools? Have the unions in these organizations included adult basic education teachers? What is the experience of teachers in other states? If you are a teacher and you are part of a bargaining unit, tell us if that has improved your work situation and if so, how your program came to be organized? David J.
